In the uncertain process of making, I do not first choose a theme and only then invent its visual form. And perhaps not the other way around either. After all, they say that whatever can be described is no longer worth depicting visually. I intuitively search for both thought and form at the same time. Whenever I come closer to one, I drift away from the other. Sometimes content and form negate one another. Or perhaps I am searching for something neutral, absolute—something that is either overwhelmingly present or almost absent, inconspicuous, strange, blending into its surroundings while never truly belonging to them. Something that speaks without words, like love at first sight, in which I am slowly losing faith.
No, making is not a sudden flash of inspiration. It is scratching at a tiny splinter that has long been lodged beneath your skin. It is necessity, longing, restlessness, the inability to perceive the surrounding world because there is something more important occupying your mind—something that is, in truth, important only to you. It is the urge to leave and begin, knowing that it may not work and that it will become something else in the end anyway. It is precisely that trembling, when you allow everything within you to pulse and vibrate, even at the cost of constantly searching for a new balance. "It is a movement that does not allow us to become stagnant, to harden within ourselves, to grow numb." And yet, after every completed work, I burn out mentally. Regularly. Automatically. At the end of every semester, I go out like a candle that has run out of wax. Then I wait, buried beneath the ground, until the weather grows warmer and the rain returns. How long can this cycle continue?
Perhaps this is exactly what my work Quiver is about. About the cycle of a fragile idea, the act of making, the peak of realization, burnout, withdrawal, and the inevitable silence that follows.
The body of work Quiver consists of several sculptural objects. Its dominant elements are two column-like forms that originally belonged to a single massive linden trunk. I cut the trunk into six sections and, through drilling and carving, separated its outer layer from the inner core. The outer fragments were charred and coated with a material sometimes referred to as "prehistoric glue"—a mixture of beeswax, resin, and ash. Once it hardened, I carved away parts of the surface with a chisel. I repeated this process with all six sections, which together form the primary mass of the first object. The resulting structure is supported by a steel construction concealed within the centre of the work.
The second object is composed of the carved inner cores of the trunk, whose outer surfaces were similarly scorched by fire. Here, however, the supporting structure no longer remains hidden inside the object but moves onto its visible exterior. The individual sections are connected by threaded steel rods and recycled metal sheets.
As I wanted to preserve the fragmentation of the trunk, I decided to install the sections with subtle gaps between them. In doing so, the sculptures acquire a certain lightness while simultaneously challenging conventional ideas of stability. They balance on narrow edges and minimal points of contact, artificially sustained by metal components and technical joints reminiscent of orthopedic fixation or the prosthetics of a fractured bone. The separation of the individual parts also evokes the vertebrae of a spine with a missing disc, recalling the initial impulse behind this work, when I explored natural cycles and the relationship between humans and nature—or more specifically, between the spine and the tree, both materially and spiritually.
Another part of the Quiver series consists of three column-like objects whose primary material is made up of thick plaster moulds, likewise coated with the aforementioned prehistoric glue. I inherited these moulds from the estate of a late ceramic artist. During their years of use, they defined firm boundaries and shapes for the clay poured into them. The liquid clay remained soft and malleable until it hardened, dried, and was fired. The resulting ceramic cast fulfilled its function until it eventually disintegrated.
To me, these moulds represent a certain idea of the world that shapes us, especially during adolescence—a world that forms us, protects us, provides boundaries, and determines our future purpose. It appears stable, solid, and bright white. Yet such a world does not exist. In reality, it contains its own cracks, fractures, and darker sides. The result is not hard, high-fired ceramic but soft and fragile resin without a bottom of its own, held together—more or less—only by the remnants of what once seemed to be a reliable world.
The mixture of beeswax, resin, and ash is not a permanent material. It is fragile and sensitive to temperature, softening under even the gentlest touch of sunlight. It is easily transient, much like human life. Or, as Byung-Chul Han writes, "It is not only human life that is radically transient, but the world itself. Nothing points toward a promise of permanence or stability."
The diploma project also includes several smaller objects created throughout the process of making.
The creation of Quiver is not merely an experimental material investigation. It is a record of experiencing both personal and global pain, and of translating these experiences into visual form. At the same time, it marks a shift within my own artistic practice and reflects my ambition to continue developing this line of inquiry in my future work.

V neistom procese tvorby si nevyberiem najprv tému a následne k nej vymyslím vizuálne stvárnenie. A asi ani naopak.
Dokedy to bude takto fungovať?
No asi práve o tom je moja práca Chvenie. O cykle drobnej predstavy, tvorby, vrcholnej realizácie, vyhorenia, útlmu a nevyhnutného ticha..
Výsledný keramický odliatok plnil svoju funkciu až do svojho rozpadu. Pôsobí stabilne, pevne a svetlo-bielo. Takýto svet však neexistuje. V skutočnosti má svoje štrbiny, praskliny a tmavé stránky.
Nič nenaznačuje prísľub trvania a stability.“
