The artwork Termite Mounds originates from the experience of a one-month stay in China, a country full of contrasts—contrasts between poverty and development, harmony with nature and its destruction, tradition and modernization, skyscraper “rabbit hutches” and small pagodas or organically shaped architecture. In a city of ten million inhabitants, the individual becomes a barely visible point within a system. The endless noise of the streets resembles the functioning of colonies of eusocial insects. In my perception, skyscrapers and housing complexes gradually transformed into something like human termite mounds—vast structures of chambers, corridors, and hierarchies.
The impulse for this perspective came from working with millions-of-years-old fossils of termites and cockroaches at the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology. The encounter between the deep time of nature and the hyper-urbanized environment of the present created a peculiar mental multiverse—a space where different collective forms of life intersect.
Termites are organisms capable of creating complex ecosystems and architectures without central control. Their nests—organic, layered, and adapted to their environment—became a counterpoint to the rational, modular architecture of modern cities. In the work, I connect two seemingly different worlds that nevertheless share striking similarities: the earthen, organic morphology of termite structures and the angular, industrial logic of human construction.
The object is made from concrete formwork blocks that evoke panel housing architecture and urban blocks. Within their openings appear plaster reliefs reminiscent of ichnofossils—the traces and tunnels of termite colonies. These structures were created from materials of everyday life in the Chinese city—food remnants such as noodles, rice, or mushrooms—bringing a living trace of the urban ecosystem back into the work.
The project thus creates a space where several “worlds” meet: the microcosm of insects, the megastructure of the city, and the experience of an individual moving between them.

Dielo Termitiská vychádza zo skúsenosti z mesačného pobytu v Číne, v krajine plnej kontrastov - kontrastov chudoby a rozvoja, súladu s prírodou a jej deštrukciou, tradície a modernizácie, mrakodrapových „králikární“ a drobných pagod či organicky tvarovanej architektúry. V desaťmiliónovom meste sa ako jednotlivec stávate sotva viditeľným bodom v systéme. Nekonečný šum ulíc pripomína fungovanie kolónií eusociálneho hmyzu. Mrakodrapy a panelové komplexy sa tak v mojej percepcii postupne transformovali na akési ľudské termitiská – rozsiahle štruktúry komôr, chodieb a hierarchií.
Impulzom pre tento pohľad bola práca s milióny rokov starými fosíliami termitov a švábov v Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology. Stretnutie s hlbokým časom prírody a súčasným hyperurbanizovaným prostredím vytvorilo zvláštne mentálne multiverzum, priestor, v ktorom sa prelínajú rôzne kolektívne formy života.
Termity sú organizmy, ktoré dokážu vytvárať komplexné ekosystémy a architektúru bez centrálneho riadenia. Ich hniezda – organické, vrstvené a prispôsobené prostrediu – sa stali kontrapunktom k racionálnej, modulárnej architektúre moderných miest. V diele prepájam dva odlišné svety, ktoré však zároveň nemajú toľko odlišností: hlinenú, organickú morfológiu termitích štruktúr a hranatú, industriálnu logiku ľudských stavieb.
Objekt je vytvorený z betónových debniacich tvárnic, ktoré evokujú panelové architektúry a mestské bloky. Do ich priezorov vstupujú sadrové reliéfy pripomínajúce ichnofosílie – stopy a chodby termitích kolónií. Tieto štruktúry vznikli z materiálov každodennosti čínskeho mesta – zvyškov jedál ako nudle, ryža či huby – čím sa do diela vracia živá stopa mestského ekosystému.
Projekt tak vytvára priestor, kde sa stretáva niekoľko „svetov“: mikrokozmos hmyzu, megaštruktúra mesta a skúsenosť jednotlivca pohybujúceho sa medzi nimi.
